For respiratory conditions, such as: Cough, bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory infections.  Its mucilage helps to soothe irritated mucus membranes by forming a protective layer over top. A very good cough suppressant and mild expectorant. The leaves were smoked by Native Americans and early American settlers to help relieve bronchial congestion, chest colds and other chest complains. Tinctures of the root were also used as a bladder tonic and the Native Americans often made Teas and tinctures of the leaves, roots, and flower to prevent and fight infections, including ear infections. Externally, Leaves can be used topically as a vulnerary and antibacterial agent to treat scrapes, boils, bruises, insect bites, and swollen glands. Also used to treat worms.  Dried leaves, roots, and flowers are good for making a bitter tea or for smoking.
